LPGA/PGA Tour Notes

Cristie Kerr, 2010 LPGA Champion, Reaches #1 in World
Cristie Kerr devastated the elite field gathered at longtime LPGA event site Locust Hill Country Club, in Rochester, New York as she took home the second major championship trophy of her already impressive career. Her record- breaking score was 12 strokes clear of Song-Hee Kim's -7, and was only two strokes short of Louise Suggs' 14 stroke women's major record margin of victory in the 1949 US Women's Open. Reminiscent of Tiger Woods' 15 stroke victory at the 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach, Kerr's historic victory also, quite befittingly, propelled her into the #1 spot on the Rolex Rankings of Women's Golf.

Cristie has been working intensively with Dr. Joe for the last two years, and credits her current stellar level of play in great part to her improved mental game.  In interviews after the LPGA Championship, she cited Zen Golf principles as being integral to her reaching her potential by providing keys to remaining focused on her routines and staying in control of all aspects of her game, especially under major tournament pressure.  Her finishes this year in the majors are a testament to this improved mental strength, with a win and 2 top five finishes.

While the #1 ranking has been quite a contentious race this year between Cristie, Ai Miyazoto and Jiyai Shin, Cristie has also been in the top 10 of the rankings for 330 consecutive weeks and finished in the top 10 of 9 of the past 16 majors, including her two wins.
The US Open
Dustin Johnson's three stroke lead on Sunday was gone by the time he reached the third tee, and so began the true battle of attrition to claim the trophy for our national championship. Proving once again how hard "sleeping on the lead" can be, the player Tiger Woods refers to as "stupid long," and normally seeming to be unflappable, DJ couldn't find fairways or greens and soon was to become a footnote to the tournament.

The Open saw the return of the 9-hole Tiger Woods highlight reel that has been absent for so long. Woods shot a 5 under par 31 on the back nine of his third round, which propelled him into 3rd place, five strokes behind Johnson at the start of play on Sunday. He was unable to regain that form on the closing day, and finished his second major of the year in a tie for 4th place.

True challenges from Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson also failed to materialize, leaving the tournament in the steady hands of Graeme McDowell, leader through 36 holes, and playing partner of Johnson on Sunday.  After his lone birdie for the day on the 5th hole, McDowell bogeyed 4 of his last 10 holes in the tournament, but needed only make par on the classic final par 5 at Pebble Beach to secure the one-stroke victory over unlikely second-place finisher Frenchman Gregory Havret.
