Tournament Notes

The Fall Series

The Fall Series provides seven tournaments after the Championship Season wherein players find themselves jockeying not only for position on the leaderboard for the week, but for position on the annual money board. All eyes focus on the all-important top 125 spots, which provide players with their Tour Cards for the following year. The usual array of suspects pulled through with victories - two first time winners (Dustin Johnson, Marc Turnesa), three second timers (Will MacKenzie, Ryan Palmer, Cameron Beckman), '07 Masters champ Zach Johnson (4th PGA Tour win), and PGA Tour Hall of Fame shoe-in, Davis Love III, who's 20th tour trophy secured him a lifetime exemption to the PGA Tour.

Having worked at several tournaments this year with Tim Petrovic, there was some concern about him keeping his PGA Tour exempt status. He missed the cut in Las Vegas and Scottsdale, doing a little too much thinking about technique. We used the theme of keep it simple for the last two tournaments, resulting in finishes of 18th and 10th places to assure his exemption. His finish in the last tournament of the year was his third top ten of 2008 and the icing on the cake, boosting his ranking on the money list to 107 on the list, well inside the cut line.

Congratulations to Team International for their win over Team Asia in the Lexus Cup. Doc spoke with Cristie Kerr before the tournament, and her two points definitely helped the Internationals in retaking the crown. Also, further congrats to Cristie on her recent induction into her hometown (Miami) Sports Hall of Fame.

Tour Stats to Know

Not one member of the PGA Tour had more than 9 top ten finishes this year. This is the first time that a player hasn't hit double digits in this category since at least 1980. Tiger Woods went 6 for 6, and only Robert Allenby and Jim Furyk managed 9 top tens, (with neither managing to add a "W"). The level and depth of talent on Tour is undisputed, but this is a very impressive stat!
