Upcoming Events: February and March Programs
Second OVI Golf Academy Program - Feb. 25-26
In December we launched the first of a series of Ojai Valley Inn Golf Academy Program that combine Dr. Joe Parent's mental game lessons with Director of Instruction Jeff Johnson's video analysis and swing technique lessons. It was enjoyed by all 12 participants, who ranged from high handicapper to head pro, from local residents to a gentleman who traveled from Holland just for the weekend program. There were individuals and couples, under 30-somethings and over 60-somethings.

The program is a unique combination of a mental game seminar each morning, followed by video and practice area lessons before and after lunch. Afternoons will feature on-the-course playing lessons. We are excited to offer the second program in the series:

  • February 25-26, 2006 , Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon

  • $995 per person (single occupancy); $1595 per couple (or double occupancy)

About the Facilities — The Ojai Valley Inn and Spa Resort sports a classic championship layout designed in the 1920's by George Thomas, the architect of Los Angeles Country Club and Riviera Country Club.

The Inn and Spa Resort is listed by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the top golf resorts in the world. It has emerged better than ever from a $70 million renovation.

Ojai is a small but strikingly beautiful valley a few miles inland from Ventura and Santa Barbara, and a little more than an hour north of Los Angeles. It was the setting for the 1930's movie classic, Lost Horizons, portraying the mythical kingdom of Shangri-la.

The Ojai Valley Inn Golf Academy's Director of Instruction is PGA professional Jeff Johnson, a former All-American who played for Eddie Merrins on the UCLA golf team.

Zen Golf Lesson: Local Knowledge
You can get a head start on a new course before you even get on the practice green. When you are playing a course for the first time, go to the pro shop, and ask for someone who plays the course often and plays it well. That person will be your source for local knowledge.

Ask about the lay of the land: is there a general, overall direction toward which the greens on the course break? For example, in the Coachella Valley of California that is home to Palm Springs there is a local rule of thumb that "all putts break toward Indio." The whole valley slopes gradually from Palm Springs in the west to Indio in the east. All other factors being equal, putts on the valley's courses have the tendency to break a bit more in that direction than they look like they will.

Also ask if there are any greens that go against the general pattern of direction for the break. Are there particular greens for which the break is much different than it appears? For example, there might be a green near a pond that breaks toward the water but doesn't look like it when you're standing near the hole.

Ask if there are any other points of local knowledge that will help you in being aware of inconsistencies in the putting surfaces? On some courses there are one or two greens that get less than the optimum amount of sunlight. Often those greens can't be mown as closely, so the putting surfaces will be a bit slower than the rest of the greens.

That brings us to another important question: how closely does the practice green resemble most of the greens on the course? Is the pace on the surface substantially slower? Do the greens on the course have more or less undulation than the practice green? How much more?

We're talking about issues related to putting, but don't let your quest for local knowledge stop there. Find out as much as you can about course conditions, hidden hazards, and other "inside information."

Getting local knowledge before you tee it up helps you be prepared for what you'll find out there. It can save you a few strokes, and can help get your round off to a much better start.
